Electrical Safety at Home

Test smoke detectors

According to ready.gov, each year more than 2,500 people die and 12,600 are injured in home fires in the U.S. In order to protect yourself and your family, test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors – regularly.  A good rule of thumb is to test your detectors whenever you change the clocks.

Test GFcI outlets

While GFCI outlets are a great source of protection, they aren’t infinite; meaning, they don’t last forever. Thankfully, GFCIs do typically last 10 years, so they should offer a good amount of protection for a very long time.

When testing your GFCI outlets, have a nightlight or similar device plugged in. Press the Reset button and the light should be on; then press the Test button and the light should go off. Press the Reset button one more time and the light should come back on again. Watch this ESFI (Electrical Safety Foundation International) video on GFCI outlets and how to test them:

By performing these simple tasks, you’ll save money on monthly energy costs and feel better about the efficiency of your home.
